Lorien was actually one of the first 10 teams to sign up for the Rebelle in 2023, but due to an unforeseen circumstance her teammate had to unexpectedly drop out just before the April training session. Simultaneously, Shelby had found out about the Rebelle Rally only three weeks before and had signed up for the April training session with high hopes, but not a lot of confidence, that she would be able to get on a team before the registration was full. Luckily, we were able to find each other through the teammate questionnaire and decided to meet up at the April training to see if we could make it work and the rest is history!

In 2020 I made a radical shift and decided to hike the PCT and the Continental Divide Trail and that’s when I discovered overlanding and off-road adventuring. Since then, I’ve combined these two passions on hiking and off-roading adventures throughout the Mountain and Southwest.

I don’t have a favorite quote. That being said, during a particularly difficult juncture in my life, someone said to me, “No matter where you find yourself, accept that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.” I felt like giving her a not-so-pleasant shove. Since then, however, it’s become something of a mantra.
My walks tend to be longer than my road trips
Community. Skills. Challenge. Growth. Opportunity. I went rogue in 2020. I gave up my apartment, my job, my “normie” lifestyle with a singular purpos — that for the next five years, I would devote myself to discovering and pursuing what truly made my heart sing. At the time, I’d never heard the term ‘overlanding,’ nor had I been on any off-road adventures. I got that chance while hiking through New Mexico and signed up for my first Rebelle U clinic within a week of purchasing my first 4WD truck (my former daily driver being a Mini Cooper). It’s been a little over a year. My learning curve has been extreme. I’m doing the Rebelle now because I can and because I want to see where it leads. I imagine I’ll stick with it. The Rebelle has come to mean more to me than a competition. It’s a community of amazing badass women from all walks of life, who both inspire me and collectively reflects back how far I’ve come in such a short time. I want to pay it forward and offer that same level of community and inspiration to others.
Who. My great grandmother escaped the Russian pogroms under Stalin and arrived alone in New York City when she was fourteen. She was a seamstress working in New York sweat shops when the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire helped spark the unionization movement in the 1920s and 30s. With two kids in tow, she later moved West to help form the Steel Workers Union in San Pedro and advocate for California farmworkers alongside Cesar Chavez. In her 90s, she taught me how to turn a cartwheel and swing a baseball bat. She was amazing. What. Backcountry wilderness in all its varied glory. I feel no greater peace than when I’m in the middle of nowhere doing something hard.
I’m not a big media person. Right now, I’m catching up on This American Life and last season’s Revisionist History (Malcolm Gladwell). I finally embraced my fantasy fiction quirk. Currently, I’m taking another listen to Tasmyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth, which centers on a necromantic lesbian warrior chick (it’s good … really). I’m also catching up on Succession (because who hasn’t) and Ted Lasso.
Twenty years ago, I took out a student loan to go on a horseback riding safari in Botswana. For three weeks, I traveled with a group through the flooded Okavango Delta into regions accessible only by horseback or boat. During that trip, I was attacked by a lion (my horse was faster), stalked by a mamba (apparently…I didn’t see it), galloped with giraffe, and watched elephants track past my tent under moonlight. It was a PTSD-inducing, awe-inspiring, overwhelmingly beautiful experience.
I come from a vanlifer-turned-overlander-turned-jeep-enthusiast background. After spending over four years living and traveling in a converted van, I’ve gotten really good at figuring out how to navigate an oversized vehicle to the most secluded, hard to reach campsites.

I recently bought land in the highest elevation town in the USA: Leadville, Colorado. And next year my big project is to build a house on it.
